Are you using Google+? If you are looking for a presence in the digital world, you should be. Bloggers and websites are using Google+ at an ever increasing rate. Today’s tutorial is a nifty little way to remind your readers that you are on Google+ and give them a way to interact with your Google+ profile without ever leaving your site!
As you can see from the screen shot above and at the bottom of this post, the embedded profile post is fully interactive. Your readers can comment and plus 1 directly on your site. This interaction shows up on your Google+ profile as well as giving your readers an additional way of interacting with you. Win win! This interaction will improve your Google+ presence as well as give your blog posts an added dimension. And, you look smart in the process!
Let me walk you through the simple way of putting this into action on your site (it should be noted that the person that told ME that this could be done was the Google guru C.R.A.F.T.!).
After you have posted your update on Google+ that you want to embed on your blog/website (yes, you have to already have the post published AND you have to have the profile update on Google+), go to that profile update that you want to embed. Click on the little arrow in the upper right corner. You will be given several choices. Choose EMBED POST.
On the pop-up that appears after you click EMBED POST you will see a couple paragraphs of code. The first paragraph we will need to deal with only once, the very first time. The second paragraph of code is what is used to place the embedded profile update into your post. In my case, it will go at the bottom of my post.
Let’s deal with that first paragraph of code first. Remember, this is only going to be once…the first time you embed a Google+ update.
Step 3. (needs to be done only the first time you embed a Google+ update)
If you are on WordPress you should be using the Genesis Simple Hooks plug-in. This makes inserting code into your site easy and painless. I will assume you are. The very first box in your Simple Hooks is your “head” hook. This box is where you will insert the first paragraph of code that Google gave you in the pop-up. Mine is showing up on the third line of code simply because I have inserted other code after this code was inserted. Just put the code at the top of your box.
If you are on Blogger, Edit your template in the usual way. Find the </head> statement. Put the code immediately before </head>. Preview your blog to be sure it didn’t go wonky. If not, save.
>>>>If you are uncomfortable working in your template, get help!<<<<<
Okay, you’ve put the proper code into your “head” file. Congratulations! You never have to do that again! Now, let’s get to the fun part…
The above screen shot shows the bottom of the “Christmas Ornaments” post on NellieBellie BEFORE the embedded Google+ profile update.
Remember that second paragraph that came up when we clicked EMBED POST on our Google+ profile update? That’s all we need to pay attention to now when we embed Google+ updates into our site. Copy that paragraph and insert the copied code into your post (use text view) wherever you would like the embedded post to appear.
>>Tip: using the center code will allow that embedded post to be center.<<
The center code: <center> YOUR CODE </center>
Now your post will show your embedded Google+ profile update. Go you!!
Remember, if you aren’t comfortable working in your blogger template…get help! Google+ is a great resource for bloggers, utilize it when you can and you will see your online presence improve and grow! Embedding Google+ profile updates is a great way to get started! Try it on a post a week to start with and see how it works for you?
