How to add items to your menu
First, each theme is different and will have various options. This tutorial covers the basic and most common choices.
Second, you will want to have your pages and categories set up prior to trying to add them to your menu. Obviously, something not created can’t be put into a menu.
Third, each theme sets things up differently. Your category pages may show up differently than another’s.
Okay, let’s get to it.
You need to head to your Appearance tab in your dashboard and choose menus from the dropdown.
You will probably see an image like this…
Choose the menu you want to edit and then click select.
You’ll see something like this (with your own menu and settings)
You can see that NellieBellie has 5 main menu items; Home, CRAFT ing, //DIY//, //Recipes//, and //Everyday//. The menu item Recipes has 4 sub items; beverages, grub, munchies, and sweets. There are 3 kinds of menu items in play on this menu: custom, page, and category (they are shown on the far right).
Again, you may have more choices, or different choices. These are the most basic.
The main menu item Recipes is using a page option (once again, look at the right). This allows her menu to link to a page. In this case, the page she is linking is her recipes project gallery. (we do those as well!!).
Many menus allow you to name your menu choice something different than what the page is. So, if you find your page title is too long you can choose to use a different title.
To add a page to your menu you need to click the dropdown arrow next to “pages”. This category will be on the left side of your menu. When you click the arrow you will see something like this…
Here you can see the most recent pages. You can also choose View All to see all your pages. Or Search if you have just that many!
In this case we want to add the Christmas Project Gallery page to our menu. We check the box for that page and then click Add to Menu.
Our Christmas Project Gallery is now at the bottom of our menu. It’s just a drag and drop to move that to where we would like it. If you would like it as a dropdown (if your theme supports that) then simply move it over under the menu item you want it to drop under until it is slightly indented. If you did it correctly you will see “sub item” show up next to the title. Yay you!
Be sure to save your menu after making any changes or your hard work won’t show up!
To add a category to your menu you follow the same steps as inserting a page. But, this time choose from the category dropdown. Insert it in the same way. Be sure to save your menu!!
The custom choice allows you to insert your own link. In this case is was used to create a home page option for her readers to go back to the blog’s home page. It has a custom url of www.nelliebellie.com. It would also be used to link to an Etsy or Ebay store with the Navigation Label of Store or something similar.
Now you are in charge of your own menu…go you!
